About the Garifuna Culture

The Garifuna flag is often seen in the opposite with the color is differnet order. The black Represents the color of the skin and the African ancestry of the Garifuna people.The white Represents the white skin of the Europeans who were the historical antagonists of the Garifuna people. The yellow represent Represents the color of the Garifuna people’s staple food – grated cassava and cassava bread.

    Traditional Instruments

    Drum

    Drums play an important role in Garifuna music. The main drum is the Segunda (bass drum). The drums are normally made by hollowing out logs and stretching antelope skin over them.The drums are handmade from cedar and mahogany, with dried deer skin stretched tautly, ready for the continuous drumming that brings the unique African beat alive in the various communities.

    Maracas

    Maracas are used in both secular and sacred Garifuna music. They are made by removing the insides of Calabashes then filled with mature seeds from a Weinwein plant. the hole then has a stick forced through to make a handle and keep the seeds inside.

  • Long dress
  • As the 19th of November approaches, Traditional Garifuna colors are yellow, black, and white: women often wear long dresses sewn from checkered material along with colorful head pieces. Men don their colorful “dashiki”: a long shirt made from similar materials as that of the women’s outfits. The shirts are not buttoned, but they drape elegantly.
